Light is everything, so time of day is very important. Early morning or late afternoon is best on sunny days. It is also cooler for the dog. Secondly I do love a good background. However, I am apt at using Photo Shop to drop interesting backgrounds in if one isn't available to us at a shoot.

I try to keep the time at or under an hour and always try to end with a fun game between me and the dog. It is important to make it fun and quick so the dog is not bored and hopefully will look forward to more fun with their favorite photographer.
